I want to take some time to just say thank you for all of your patience and understanding as our school community transitions to the new online learning platform. There has been a lot of growth in using this method of learning and teaching. I promise that by next week our learners will be more comfortable. Moving forward, I want you to know that I am planning more project based learning to make the students become more engaged. I feel like sitting at home all day in front of a computer is not the best situation for an 8-9 year old child.

In UOI this week students were introduce to the new unit regarding how we organise ourselves. The central idea is that signs and symbols are part of human-made systems that facilitate local and global communication. Students had a fun time looking at signs and symbols around the school and through online research. Next week we will be doing a project that has students making signs and symbols they can place around their home in order to help better organise themselves and others. The signs and symbols they make can also be used to help keep themselves and others more safe.

In math class students worked hard to really show their understanding of perimeter and why people need to know how to measure perimeter. Students enjoyed the math stations that had them moving around the room to try different activities involving perimeter. Moving forward to the next week, students will continue their unit on measurements by focusing on calculating the Area.

In English class students learned how to write a proper opening paragraph that introduces setting and characters for a personal narrative. I was able to model the writing of an opening paragraph and discuss how we can hook the reader through sound, questions, or dialogue. I was able to provide an anchor chart to help students remember how to hook their audience. The written samples from our learners really show a progressing understanding of proper paragraph formation and introduction writing skills. Next week will focus on more writing samples of opening paragraphs and continuation writing of our personal narratives. Students will also have opportunities to write reflection pieces that examine their learning over the course of next week.

In science class students learned all about the digestive system. We worked hard to name and understand the parts that make up the digestive system and how they work together. We made diagrams with labels and we even did an experiment that shows how food is digested. Next week we will learn about how our teeth work and what they can do.
