Year 3/4 Week 5 Blog

This week we have a few announcements to make. On the 21st of September we will have a professional doctor visiting our classroom for 2 class periods to present to our students. He will be covering information about the body systems and how they function which relates directly to our UOI.

Also, on the 28th of September we will have our first field trip of the 2018/2019 school year. As part of our Unit of Inquiry we will be visiting two location near UD Town. The first location is Denta-Joy Clinic where the students will learn about the importance of good oral hygiene and how it can affect other parts of the body if poor oral care is taken.

The second location that we will visit is 9D Sport Hotel which is a fitness center and children's entertainment park. At this location the students will learn about proper exercise procedures and the importance of incorporating exercise into their daily lives to promote good health. Upon returning from this field trip the students will reflect and make connections between the locations visited, what they have learned and what type of action they can take to improve their body's health.

Parental Consent Forms will go home today. Please sign and return the form no later than Friday, 21st of September. If a parent chooses not to allow their child to attend this field trip please keep the child home on the morning of the 28th of September as there will not be anyone in the classroom to watch your child. The child may then come to school at 12:25pm when we return to school and resume our regular class schedule. A copy of this information and Parental Consent Form will also be emailed to you.

This week during UOI class we covered the Digestive System. The students learned about the functions of the Salivary Glands, Small Intestines, Large Intestines and the Stomach. The students learned how food is processed in our body and passes through the digestive system. They learned that the small intestines help to gather the vitamins and nutrients from the food we eat and turn it into energy for our bodies. They also began a Food Log to keep track of their daily food intake. At the end of 1 week the students will research how many calories they ate each day and compare it to what a heathy and balanced caloric intake should be based upon their age and gender. Also, this week Ms. PJ and I have decided to rearrange some of the UOI groups so the students can team up with new partners for the remaining few weeks of this Unit of Inquiry.

In Maths this week the groups worked on learning geometrical shapes. They learned about identifying both 2 dimensional and 3 demential shapes. The students learned how to identify vertices, faces, and edges. One activity that the students took part in was learning the 3 demential shapes using building blocks. The students also learned about the three different types of triangles (-Scalene (all sides are different, - Isosceles (two sides are equal and -Equilateral (all three sides are equal)

In English Class the students worked on how verbs are used in proper sentence structure. The students worked on developing their skills in identifying verbs and adverbs in the sentences. The students also took part in Phonics activities using the Jolly Phonics series. The students created stories within their groups using Mind Maps. They were to identify all verbs that were used in their stories and highlight them. The students were introduced to the new words of the week to understand each meaning. For reading comprehension the students also have been assigned 2 levelled readers. Each Monday the students will receive 2 new levelled readers which they will read and practice their comprehension and fluency skills at home. Next week, I will reassess the students reading levels using the PM Readers to see if any of the students are ready to advance to the next level.
