                                                                                                 Maths

In maths this week students continued to work on strengthening their understanding of place value in numbers containing up to five digits. Students had to use base ten blocks to represent numbers based upon place value word representation. For example, students were able to recognise that 15 ones contained 1 group of ten and therefor must be added to the tens place. Using base ten blocks really helped the students visualise the concept of groups of numbers (100s, 10s, 1s) regarding place value. Also, students learned a new method for two digit by two digit multiplication called the grid method. With this method students used their new knowledge of place value to separated the two digit numbers into ones and tens. For example 52 would become 50 and 2. Once each two digit number was separated, students drew a grid to perform their calculations. They loved learning news ways to make multiplication more efficient.

UOI
In UOI this week students continued to work on their religion research projects. The final project will be an informational poster that will be presented at an exhibition at school. Parents, staff, and students will be invited to take part in this exhibition.

In English this week students enjoyed read aloud activities where they took part in discussions regarding key vocabulary, setting, making predictions and drawing inferences around characters' thoughts, feelings, motives, and actions.

During Thursday's assembly students participated in discussions about passions. The month of October will focus on following your passions. Teachers were able to share some of their passions with students during this assembly. The goal is for students to think about what is important to them and take action to practice meaningful interests.

PE

Our swimming days in Year 4 are Tuesdays and Fridays. Thank you for remembering your swimming kits this week. Thank you to those parents who notified us when your child was unable to participate in a swimming lesson. If your child cannot do swimming for any particular reason, please notify the office.

Students were able to visit a Christian Church as part of their UOI world religion study. Next week, students will also visit a Muslim Mosque. During the field trip students were very well behaved, respectful and inquisitive.
