In English class this week students worked on adding suffixes beginning with vowels to words of more than one syllable. Suffixes added included -er, -ed, -ing, and -d. For spelling students practiced their 'im' words suck as imbalance, immature, immoral, impatient, and improper. Assessment for these words will take place on Monday and students will be given new words starting with 'dis.' Students also continued to focus on producing written work samples such as narratives and essays that use proper paragraphs, complete sentences and correct punctuation. Finally, students enjoyed a creepy read aloud about the legend of Bigfoot. Students took turns reading passages along with me. We even got to write some complete sentences regarding what evidence the book presents that makes people believe Bigfoot is real. Please know that buddy reading and reading to a teacher will take place everyday so that students can rack up their reading milage and progress to higher levels of reading. Please allow your child to read to you for at least 10 minutes each evening and on weekends. Please sign your child's reading log after each reading.
Next week students will receive instruction regarding the use of inverted commas to indicate direct speech in writing. Students will produce their own complete sentences that have direct speech and correctly use inverted commas and other punctuation. Students will continue using the writing process to produce writing samples that utilise proper paragraph formation, complete sentences, and correct punctuation. Students will also identify and use Standard English verb inflections.

In math class this week students were introduced to measurements. We learned how inch rulers, meter sticks, and tape-measures work and how to use them to find the length of various objects, students, and staff around the school. I was a good sport and let the kids measure me also. Furthermore, we looked into how to find the area of various rectangular shapes by using the formula A= L x W.
Next week students will continue to focus on measurements including writing money with decimal notation and converting various units of measurements. Students will also review prior learning by practicing multiplication and division.
