Week 12 Term 2
UOI
In UOI this week students worked on making their own signs and symbols to help their family and themselves be more organised and safe. Students were able to reflect on one of our lines of inquiry regarding how people use visual language to communicate with each other. Students have had quite a bit of fun with this kind of project based learning.
Next week in UOI students will start a new project that involves making a large map of a town. There will be streets, schools, hospitals, shops, parks, and more. This really is up to our learner's imagination. Students will need to organise their town with signs and symbols. I will be sending a rubric in Monday's schedule that highlights this project further. Students can make a 2d or 3d town.
Maths
In maths this week students learned how to calculate area with the equation length times width. We worked with grid paper to understand that area is the measure of the surface of a 2D rectangle. Students also worked with numbers and place value through studyladder.com
Next week in math students will be introduced to understanding how a coordinates grid works and how to plot specific coordinates. I have many fun activities planned for helping our learners understand this new concept. Activities include bingo, coordinate art, find the person hiding, and name the location. Maths this next week will also be integrated with the new UOI project. Students will need to practice using a ruler and understand how to make rectangles with a certain area in order to represent buildings on their map.
English
In English class this week students really stepped up their understanding of writing complete opening paragraphs to a personal narrative. It was nice to finally be seeing some real progress in the formation of proper paragraph writing where there is a clearly indicated introduction, body, and conclusion. Students have also been assigned studyladdar.com tasks as well as are required to read outloud to someone for at least 10 minutes everyday. Please don't forget to help your son or daughter keep their reading logs updated. Thank you for your help with this.
Next week in English students will continue to practice their paragraph writing pieces. Daily tasks next week will also include more free writing and online writing homework through studyladder. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and hopefully this virus thing will get better soon. Stay safe and healthy. Wash your hands often!
