Maths
In math class this week students learned how to convert time from a 12 hour format to a 24 hour format. We also learned how to use multiplication to figure out how many seconds are in a set of minutes. For example, 12 minutes has 720 seconds (60 x 12). Students did a wonderful job working out a long multi-step problem that asked how many seconds there are in one week.
Next week we will be learning about how to convert different units of measurements. For example, how to convert kilometers to miles, inches to feet, centimeters to meters, and kilograms to pounds.
English
In English class this week students have continued working on improving their writing abilities through the writing process. The goal is for students to organize their writing using paragraphs and improving their writing through self and peer evaluation, revision, and rewriting to produce a final piece that can be shared.
Next week students will continue to fine tune their writing capabilities by focusing on writing that uses determiners such as the following. Articles: a/an, the. Demonstratives: this/that; these/those. Possessives: my/yours/his/her/its/our/their. Quantifiers: some, any, no, many, much, every. Students will also work on adding more dialog to their written work next week.
Science
Y4 learners have been having a lot of fun exploring the states of matter. We have learned that EVERYTHING is made out of matter, including our own bodies and the air we breath. Our learners have been able to identify the three states of matter (liquid, gas, solid) by examining water and how it can change to all three states through heating or cooling. We also did an experiment where we grew sugar crystals to demonstrate how sugar dissolves into water going from a solid to a liquid and back to a solid over time as water evaporates. We learned how to make observations and record our data too.
Next week we will be learning about the human impact on the environment and how that can impact animal life here on Earth. Students will work to understand how environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to livening things.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!!
